Diese Tage in Terezín

Czech comedian and cabaret artist Karel Švenk was deported in 1941 on the first transport from Prague to the Nazi ghetto at Theresienstadt. There, he played a leading role in shaping cultural life and became known as the ‘Chaplin of Theresienstadt’. In early October 1944, he was first deported to Auschwitz and then to a factory near Leipzig. He died on 1 April 1945 on a deportation train bound for Mauthausen. Fifty years later, in the film DIESE TAGE IN TEREZÍN, filmmaker Sibylle Schönemann wanders the streets of Terezín with author Lena Makarova and Israeli singer Victoria Hanna Gabbay. With every new encounter with people who knew Švenk, an ever-expanding network emerges, fostering a dialogue between cultures and generations alike. And with it, remembrance: of laughter as an act of resistance.
